You realize that to regain your health you must go gluten free. How do you do it easily, without too much overwhelm? Today I will share some tips that worked for me as I began the journey to go gluten free easily. You may be surprised!
My journey to gluten free living really began many years before I even realized I was gluten sensitive. As I have written about before I was struggling with my health for most of my adult life and was looking for solutions to feel great. Without even realizing it I began making changes with the habits I knew I could win at if I changed them.
For example 16 years ago I never drank water. At that time in my journey, I was learning that water/hydration is very important for good health. In fact, hydration is one of the 6 Pillars to Wellness. My choice of beverage at that time was soft drinks.
I learned that drinking pop is really a poor health choice. I knew to make the change it would be easier for me if there was some familiarity in my beverage so I went from soft drinks to sparkling water. This worked for me, as I have never gone back to drinking pop. Today I only drink filtered water, no bubbles except on special occasions. Feel good for it as well.
Go Gluten Free With One Simple Idea
I began to look at making changes to how I ate over 10 years ago. The first book I ever read about diet and began to follow was the Eat Right 4 Your Type -Peter J. D’Adamo, then moved on to the Metabolic Typing -William L. Wolcott, then the 4 Hour Body – Tim Ferris, and finally Practical Paleo Diane Sanfilippo.
It really was a progression of learning how to eat real food. This is what these past 10 years in my journey have been about. Learning about REAL FOOD. You see each one of these books I read and followed the ideas were about eating real food. There were no processed foods that are healthy in any of these programs. There were no boxed foods in the menu plans.
Each program I learned a bit more about how I felt after eating any particular food and meal. Did the meal energize me, or did the meal make me tired? Today it is really fascinating that I can recognize immediately if I eat too much fat or if I eat too much veg/carb at a meal. This is the tip here for you as you go gluten free. Every time you eat it does affect you. Listen to that and the transition will be much easier.
Go Gluten Free By Eliminating The Obvious First
Now when it comes to the idea of how to go gluten free the easiest, simplest way that again worked for me was to eliminate all bread, pasta, crackers first. I began this practice long before I knew I was gluten sensitive . I would only make or eat lunches that had no bread, pasta crackers. You see I wanted the success in making the change. I knew there was much more to eliminate however if I started with the most obvious and succeeded there everything else would be simple. And it was!
My lunches would be a homemade pastured hamburger patty, either chicken, beef or pork, with homemade coleslaw (here is my version of homemade coleslaw – really easy and delish!) That is how simple it was for me. I would make 4 burgers and have them for 1-2 lunches. Or I would cook pastured sausage with a spinach salad and homemade olive oil, lemon, garlic, sea salt salad dressing.
Here is where the variety and imagination can work wonders. You see we seem to get caught up in certain foods at certain times! Nothing wrong with leftovers for breakfast, breakfast food for lunch, etc. It definitely made it really easy for me to succeed and this is what I am suggesting for you.
The next category go gluten free is to make sure every spice in your cupboard is gluten free. This was a big challenge because I never thought that gluten would be in spices, sauces, salad dressings, vinegar, soy sauce. We found an Organic product line here is Canada and I have also found out that McCormick’s says they are gluten free. Always be sure to check the label.
