Healthy Weight Loss, Digestion and Autoimmunity
This month has been busy with health education for sure and I have been learning about healthy weight loss at The Weight Loss Solution Summit, Digestion at the Digestion Sessions and improving Autoimmune Diseasse at The Autoimmune Summit! “If you watched our session with Dr. Kharrazian, you learned that most thyroid issues are hypothyroid, or an underactive thyroid gland. That means that your thyroid is not producing enough of the hormones it is supposed to – which leads to symptoms like infertility, fatigue, weight gain, and even heart disease.
You also learned that most hypothyroid is actually caused by Hashimoto’s, which is an autoimmune disease in which your body starts to attack your thyroid gland, causing the same symptoms as above — fatigue, weight gain, thinning hair, etc.
I know, not very nice of your body, right?
Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis generally happens when you are eating certain foods that wreak havoc on your gut & digestive system.
Some of these foods will damage the lining of your gut, causing food particles to enter your bloodstream.
Once these food particles enter your bloodstream, your body treats them like foreign invaders, and will send antibodies to attack them.
If this were to happen just once, you’d probably be fine. Your body would take care of it, and then your immune system would essentially go back to its day-to-day activities.
However, if you are constantly eating these foods, you never allow your gut to heal. If the food particles are constantly entering your bloodstream, it means your immune system is constantly trying to attack them.
And, unfortunately, your immune system can only keep up its battle against these food particles for so long before fatiguing, and starting to get, well…confused.
Here’s where our #1 worst food comes in.
The #1 worst food for your thyroid is GLUTEN.
Inside of the gluten protein there is a component called gliadin, which weirdly enough, looks like your thyroid.
And when our immune system is continually fighting gluten & other food particles, it starts to get confused and will actually attack your thyroid — which is Hashimoto’s Disease.
Which, of course, is not something you want.
So, what do you do?
The first thing is to immediately take gluten out of your diet. Unfortunately, the effects of eating one serving of gluten can last for up to 6 months, so going “sort of” gluten free will NOT solve this issue.
You’ll have to completely remove it from your diet.
A good way to test if gluten is the culprit of your thyroid issues & symptoms is to remove it for 30 days and see how you feel. You don’t even need to get a blood test, because if gluten is the problem (which it very likely is), you’ll feel a massive difference in your day-to-day wellbeing.
Meaning you’ll have dramatically less of whatever symptoms you’re experiencing.
If you take out gluten and it ISN’T enough (it wasn’t for me, unfortunately), then the next step is to remove ALL grains from your diet, including corn, oats, and rice — as they all contain proteins that are similar enough in structure to gluten to elicit an immune response.
Using this strategy (and some help from a naturopathic doctor), I was able to clear up my hypothyroid condition — and I know if you try the above, you should find quite a bit of relief from your symptoms.
Of course, if diet changes don’t make enough difference for you, I’d highly recommend looking up a naturopathic doctor in your area to help you out.
Finally, I know that it’s not always easy to remove gluten and all grains from your diet — but there are PLENTY of delicious foods & recipes out there that are grain & gluten-free.
