More than motivation to create change!
It’s more than motivation to create change! I have heard a number of times over the past few weeks about motivation to change. It made me think way back 30 years ago when I began my journey to reduce my weight, get fit, get healthy.
You see at that time I was young, had been in a couple of accidents, was overweight and really intimidated to walk into a gym to find out about a membership. It took me quite a long time to actually go from thinking about exercise in a gym to actually getting a membership.
It was really hard. I remember a few times driving to the gym with the thought that I would get a membership that day. Yet I left without even walking into the gym to find out about a membership. At that time the gym was mostly guys, body building gym. A very intimidating place for an overweight young woman.
Then a few years later a friend and I made the decision that it would be great to start body building. So together we went to the local gym, got memberships and started. Over the next 2 years, I don’t think we missed a day.
We Create Change By “Showing Up”
In the beginning, we really didn’t know that much about exercise, body building, making a change. Yet we “Showed Up” excited about the possibilities of change. We had tons of fun, laughed, struggled, met people who helped us and things began to happen.
We were a funny pair. You see I was 80 lbs overweight, out of shape and my friend already looked in shape. I am almost 6 feet tall and my friend is 5′ tall. But it worked.
She ended up competing in a novice bodybuilding competition and won. It was great to experience that. For me, I went from being really overweight to being in very good shape. The transformation was awesome.
The journey we took in our first gym experience wasn’t about motivation.
We were ready. We had gone through the process necessary to create a successful transformation.
What I didn’t realize or even know at the time is I went through a whole process to change. It is called the “Stages of Change” or Transtheoretical Model. I know I lost you. Hang on it will make sense. You will see it’s more than “motivation”. It is the process we go through to create successful change. When I began to realize that making successful change is about going through a process, I began to stress out less, figure out where I was in that “Stages of Change” model and work through exactly what I wanted to happen for me.
It helped me feel better about myself. Understanding the process helped eliminate the shame I had lived with in being overweight. It created success for me and it can certainly do the same for you!
Tomorrow I will show you the 5 Stages of Change model.
I will show you a strategy to begin understanding how we create change and that it’s more than just motivation!
