What Motivates You To Achieve Your Health Goals?

By | April 3, 2013

What motivates youWhat motivates you!

Today I want to share some ideas for motivation and help you figure out what motivates you? A very long time ago I heard a saying: What motivates, motivates.  I took that to mean that each of us is different and what motivates me might not have the same impact for you.  Over the years of working closely with clients this seems to be true! So, let’s dig in to find some actionable ideas on the subject, What motivates you?

The ideas today are simply ways for you to implement, so your motivation will become clearer and more focused.

I found an interesting article on this subject by author  Tam Mei Tan, and the article is 6 Ways to Get Motivated. (This article is no longer available) I enjoyed the article because it lays out the idea of motivation by simply figuring out a way to take action.  What motivates, motivates!  According to the author it all comes back to choosing a goal and choosing to be passionate in an actionable way.  I find that to be true, do you?

Here are the 6 Ways to Get Motivated and the link to the complete article – http://themaverickpaper.com/6-ways-to-get-motivated/

Here’s some concrete steps to help your fluffy dreams become solid reality!

Use these tips to learn how to motivate yourself:

1. Know your end goal

This might sound like the most obvious thing to say, but it’s the most obvious thing we don’t do! In every project or commitment that you invest in, know what you want before jumping into it. Purpose is a trigger for motivation; if you know your purpose, you would be more likely to follow through on your project.

Once you’ve envisioned what you want to come out of the project, keep your mind focused on that end goal. For example, if you want to lose weight, know just how many kilograms you want to shed instead of being vague about the figure.

2. Know why you’re doing it

If you don’t know or don’t have good enough reason to do something then it will be hard to get it done. If you want to do something then figure out a strong reason to do it.

The ‘how-to’ steps to success are not always the most exciting steps to take, but knowing the ‘why’ will help keep you going at the ‘how’. Keeping the ‘why’ in focus as you move towards your end goal will also determine whether you actually stick to your purpose and make it to the finish line.

3. Start Slow

Often you’re so full of excitement when you start something that it feels as if your enthusiasm and self-limitation knows no bounds. You feel as if you can do anything, but it’s not long before you learn that you do have limitations and your enthusiasm begins to wane. So before we jump right into something and go all out, HOLD BACK! Plan out a course of action that suits your limitations and abilities.

For example, if you’re planning a business venture, you might get overly excited and rush to find investors, source for supplies, start advertising and hire workers all within the span of two weeks. Stop! Take a step back and make a progressive plan that suits your schedule and ability. Don’t rush everything all at the same time.

Number 4 is my favourite what motivates you tip because it allows you to win!

4. Do something small and create a flow

Clean your room. Pay your bills. Or wash the dishes. You just need to get started to get motivated. So if you don’t feel like doing anything, start with something small and work your way up to something bigger.

5. Make a deal with yourself

Make a deal to reward yourself for the steps your take towards your goal, big or small. Deals can be something like: When I’m done with this chapter/ these reports I can have a snack.

6. If all else fails, act like it.

If you don’t feel motivated or enthusiastic then act like it. The strange thing is that within a few minutes you will actually start to feel motivated or enthusiastic for real.

So what motivates you?  Do any of these ideas resonate to help you become more motivated and reach your goals?

It would be great to hear  what motivates you personally in the comment section below!

That’s a good list. For me, what resonates most is to know my end goal & to start slow. Knowing the end goal is like the light at the end of the tunnel, the finish line in your sights. To me it works similar to a vision board – something to look forward to. Starting slow is a good one for me too. By nature, I’m a cautious person. I will always look into something before I do it. That doesn’t mean that I don’t take risks, I just weigh the pro’s and cons before making a decision. I like to know what I’m getting into and learn processes…..take my time and enjoy the ride!
